Proper tree Pruning and Restoration

Pruning of trees is a harmful procedure. Therefore, proper pruning involves understanding when, how much, and where branches and stems should be removed. Many of our client’s trees have been malpruned in the past (either by unprofessional landscape or tree services, or by previous homeowners). In this case restoration pruning may be necessary.

Controlled Removals

When necessary to remove a tree, it is important to protect objects below from damage due to falling tree parts. Techniques involve lifting, lowering, or sliding parts horizontally along ropes. (Sometimes rigging processes become very complicated.) This is perhaps the most dangerous aspect of tree work.

Structural Risk Assessment 

Assessment begins with a visual assessment of a trees structure, growing conditions, as well as an assessment of surrounding trees and shrubs. A history of the site going back several decades is often necessary to make an informed diagnosis. If further investigation is necessary, arrangements for other advanced testing equipment may be required, such as an Inclino-elasto pull test, which measures the amount of force required to tip over or break a tree. Also, other non-invasive tools such as the PiCUS tomograph which uses sound to develop a cross sectional picture of the inside of a tree, for locating decay.

Surprising to some, domestic Cats often do not know how to climb out of trees. Some of our rescue clients have had their pets stuck in trees without food and water for over a week. Animal rescue is billed at $150.00 flat fee.

Spurless tree Climbing

In order to safely (for trees as well as people) perform tree work, a tree professional will install an overhead anchor from the ground and ascend and work a tree using ropes and knots hardware. Tree spikes or gaffs leave unsightly wounds on tree trunks that persist for years, and cause wounds to the actively growing transport system of a tree. Tree wounds do not heal.

Precision Felling

A service we occasionally perform, precision felling in the urban environment involves understanding tree structure as well as many techniques for directing a tree, perhaps weighing several tons, to fall in a direction other than its current lean. There is often a high consequence of failure in the urban setting. For example, after a severe storm blew through the Northwest in December 2006, many trees were failed, but not fallen. In other words, a tree may have been partially uprooted and leaning towards a high value structure. These trees were unsafe to climb and often inaccessible by heavy equipment. Using advanced guying and pulling techniques, trees such as these could be felled indirections other than their lean, such as between sections of fence into a neighbor’s yard.
